The flag of New Caledonia is a tricolour flag featuring three horizontal bands of blue, red, and green. The blue symbolizes the ocean surrounding the archipelago, the red represents the bloodshed during the Kanak independence movement, and the green stands for the lush vegetation and the land itself.
In the center of the flag is a disc emblem featuring a Kanak warrior's stylized head in profile, surrounded by 25 small yellow and white rays representing the sun. The Kanak warrior is a symbol of the indigenous Melanesian people of New Caledonia.
The flag was adopted on July 4, 2010, following a referendum on the flag and name of New Caledonia. It replaced the previous flag, which featured a Union Jack in the canton and the French tricolour in the fly. The new flag was selected to reflect the unique cultural and historical heritage of New Caledonia.
